Corey, I'm going to plead to "partial" here. I'll think about it, but I don't know that I'll be able to come to an answer using the above typology. Good point about Colbert's show as existing to make its audience feel good about itself. Colbert is also a very talented comic in general. He was one of the very few good things in that horrible Mike Myers movie about "The Love Guru."

Stewart (from what I've seen) tries to keep some distance from Team Blue in a way that Chris Matthews doesn't anymore. Matthews used to be able to criticize "his" side, but when MSNBC's business model changed to becoming a televised left-wing version of a second rate right-wing radio station, Matthews went along with public (and sometimes grotesque) enthusiasm. I would guess that the difference between the public Chris Matthews of 2012 and that of say 1999 has more to do with careerism than some intense political love affair with Obama.

Pete- Where would you put something like The Daily Show and Colbert Report? Although billed as comedies, many young people have their only contact with current events through these shows and stories that go viral online. Stewart is clearly liberal, but does seem to have an independence of mind. His show has evolved from a satire of a news show to an actual news show where jokes are made about the news. Colbert's show is more of a satire, but of course, it is a satire on the kind of conservative "group therapy" you refer to here.
