Mattie surely was a southern republican and as such her 'country' was Arkansas, but this is the same political construct as the founding generation envisioned and nothing more. Unfortunately, it was just the opposite of the un-American (and dare I say, "foreign") vision of the Lincolnites and consolidators who sought to destroy the very ground of American republicanism.
Talk of Miss Mattie's sexuality smacks of the effort on the part of modernists to reduce human existence to erotica by citing the purposefully erroneous work of Masters and Johnson. My guess is Mss Mattie couldn't find a man good enough, which concurs with the thoughts of Ms. O'Connor who once claimed they were hard to find.

Peter's another happy Portis-convert. It could turn out that the greatest accomplishment of the Coens' TRUE GRIT was to spark a revival of interest in the truly great Charles Portis.

Haven't left yet...current plan is to sweep below Isaac on Thursday after spending tomorrow night somewhere b/t Mobile and Montgomery. A direct hit from a lower category storm on NOLA likely, and certainly as soon as there's the slightest news of levee-break I'm U-turning it, but my big questions now are: a) road closures, b) electricity at APSA and at our rental, c) Lake Ponchartrain.

My "grit" has more to do with a non-refundable rental and my better half wanting to go all summer than my dedication to the profession or panel. But we may have a nice Alabama excursion instead!
