Not sure what it is that I hear that Tim doesn’t. I’ve yet to hear Dave Gonzalez be derivative. To whom exactly are you suggesting he is derivative of? Besides, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Me thinks neither The Burnett Bros. nor Hollywood Fats, nor SRV can play a Gonzalez lick any more than he could play one of theirs. Maybe some ear wax removal is necessary, Tim. “The question of artist vs. craftsman seems to imply that one is better than the other, but I would argue that that is not the case. They simply have a different set of skills, and one can be both at different times. Hey, Tim and Gary, glad you ran across this.

Without agreeing entirely, Tim, I do want to use your comment to stress that the example of the Hacienda Brothers was an important one. I really hope we get others trying to explore that soul/CW crossroads. Been playin’ those CDs constantly.

This article is well-written, I have a couple opinions about the content…

To me, everything I’ve heard Dave play is derivative of somebody else. He doesn’t strike me as a truly creative type, just another musician with chops (big deal) – a craftsman, not an artist.

He appears to hit something ‘new’ with the Hacienda Brothers but judging by the retracement to mediocrity of the Stone River Boys the ‘artist’ of the Haciendas was Chris Gaffney. HE is the one that should be heralded.

So I’m checking up on Dave Gonzalez and come across a blog post on — of all things! — First Things. Amazing. I sort of get your focus on Dave’s goodness and decency, but I can’t help thinking that you’re reaching a bit (but this is First Things!).

Dave should be a star. The Paladins were a force of nature. The Haciendas were fantastic. The new outfit, without Gaffney, isn’t the same. Can’t wait to see what Dave does down the line, though.

Re: Stone River Boys: On their homepage (http://www.stoneriverboys.com/) there are quite a few upcoming dates in OK, TX, MO, IA, MI, WI, NE throughout October…

I may be a dinosaur, but I say that some music just must be listened to on vinyl. Hearing this stuff on CD or download just ain’t the same…

Dave Gonzalez now is a Texan. And yeah, I’m up for that fight anytime, knowin’ my man has the better chops. What a battle of the axes that could have been! Or perhaps was at sometime…Vaughan was a Paladins fan back in the day(and I assume vice-versa), and they were always playin’ in Austin. So perhaps they crossed more than just paths.

But as for the less serious stuff, even with Zooey, it’s more the voice for me. I usually don’t fall much for blonds and think she’s cutest in ELF, whereas in fact she’s a brunette. 1. Don’t provide links to Zooey Deschanel songs if you want the reader to keep reading whatever else you have to say.

2. If you’re going to provide links to Zooey Deschanel songs, make them to the actual video of the song in question, no matter how substandard said video might be, especially if said video features one Zooey Deschanel. See #1–the reader’s already gone anyway…

3. From a search of the archives, it appears that you never mentioned Zooey Deschanel appears in Almost Famous. Surely this oversight was done to prevent the reader from clicking away from your epic, but methinks it might explain why said movie was worth 5 entries in the songbook, no?

4. Better than Stevie Ray? Them’s fightin’ words, my friend. Texans don’t tolerate that sort of thing…
