Well, it’s not Christmas, but for exquisite, understated piety and hope and gratitude, against the background of the great sorrows and disappointments of life (but I suppose the sorrows are the foreground, and the grace is in the background, or shimmering on the margins), you can’t beat the perfectly titled: Tender Mercies. I used to make my family watch it every Thanksgiving. Robert Duvall as washed-up country singer Mac Sledge.

Just from tradition I like to watch It’s a Wonderful life. It is probably too classically progressive, or perhaps imaginatively so. What does It’s a Wonderful life the imaginately conservative version look like?

Well Bernard Mandeville sends a devil who is trying to get his tail… To give George the flip side of being born more selfish. The devil(clarevoyance) does not contest the pottersville scenario but shows George that the person he would become wouldn’t care. George at first was having some guilt about some of his wealth, but the devil in trainning (staring Charlie Sheen) fulfills his mandate(earns his tail) by spicing things up with vice. George has christmas at the playboy mansion, and does a line of coke. The playmate bunny voluptuously hanging over him suggests that every time you do a line of coke a devil gets his tail. After an orgy, George wakes up in a semi daze to find clarevoyance missing, on a mirror with a pile of coke, he finds the following note: (Duh, winning! Tiger’s Blood and Adonis DNA. P.S. Thanks for the tail, hope you enjoyed yours. Feel things differently, Clarevoyance!)

I suppose it’d be cheating to mention the Lord of the Rings, which are fundamentally about providential assistance coming “unlooked-for out of the west,” or, eucatastrophe as Tolkien called it. The adaptations do not obscure that part of the books.

Also cheating, but in a complimentary way because it’s a miniseries: the BBC adaptation ofvBrideshead Revisited.

Maybe Shyamalan’s best, Signs, is pretty clearly a morality tale about the need for grace to face demons both interior and exterior.

The first and third of my suggestions are for people who want to watch a movie about grace and munch some popcorn at the same time. The middle is the most theologically astute and the least popcorn friendly. Maybe a Sauvignon blanc wh strawberries instead.
