That was exactly the subtext of Poedhorertz’s My Negro Problem in ours. Proximity breeds contempt just as easily as familiarity, but intermarriage would be a racial solvent.

I’ve always been one to stress that the segregation status did not equal the slavery status.

But reading Wilkerson, and developing some of my own thoughts below, and in the thread, has brought me to agree with Peter’s point 8. The stark classic injustice of slavery in some ways made it less of moral offense, or at least less of a psychological abuse, than the sneaking law-violating oppression of segregation.
