I subscribe to the Wall Street Journal, as a corrective to the Washington Post. I agree with the WSJ more than the Post but am sometimes brought up short by their extreme libertarianism. Like the earnest piece explaining why top executives really do earn their excessive bonuses; some of them really are indispensable, and others will only go away & retire if they get a big payoff (I can understand that 2nd reason). But when the writer used the case of the top performer who got $125 million as a bonus, I could only think: who on earth could need that much-- even if he somehow "earned" it? That's the mentality we have to get away from!

1)I actually disagree with Douhat that there has been a "collapse in the church’s reputation" between 2005 and now. The high point of criticism about the sex scandals was in about 2003 I think, with the Boston cases. And a good portion of the media was not kind to JPII as he was dying, turning his Parkinsons into a talking point in favor of assisted suicide and against the Church's stance on the Terry Schiavo case.

2)Nor do I think Douhat is correct that there has been a "substantial loss of Catholic influence in American political debates." If anything Catholics play a much larger role in the Republican party than they ever have before, a situation that has caused many Protestants that I know to ask, "why isn't our denomination stepping up like the Catholics"?

3)Even if we are at the end of one "Catholic Moment," there is another one just around the corner with the new wave of Catholic immigrants, the hispanics.

America is a protestant nation. Catholicism has always a bit off-center of where America is, the past 50 years especially.

Santorum (and others) had/have it exactly right that Kennedy's famous speech sent things badly off the rails, Catholic-moment wise. It's far too late to course correct now.

The sad thing is that both sides talk past each other, and have forced each other further and further apart.

As a fiscal conservative, I am very vary of unions. Having seen them destroy firms personally. However, as a conservative Lutheran, I have grave concerns about all the power being in the hands of corporations who will make decisions based on what benefits the higher management without concern to the workers or customers.

It seems that in today's political structure, the ideal of a more Godly economy is not one that anyone is working toward.
