Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) vividly illustrated the recklessness and incompetence of our current government. He said about those who ask that our elected representatives read the bill:
I love these members, they get up and say, “Read the bill.” What good is reading the bill if it’s a thousand pages and you don’t have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill?”
James Madison is spinning in his grave.

It’s unbelievable. We’ve come to the day where
a Congressman is put out that he is expected to read and understand legislation before he votes on it. Are the good people of Michigan
comfortable with the knowledge that the man
who represents them can’t be bothered to cast
an informed vote, but is content to vote as his
overlords instruct? If this legislation, or any of
the other bills that have been recently passed
unread, is regretted by the nation in the future,
will we still accept the excuse from our members of Congress that they couldn’t find the time to do. their. job.? I’m asking in all
seriousness — if the job of a Congressman
is not to review, discuss, amend and debate
legislation prior to casting an informed vote –
then what is it? The Hon. Mr. Conyers seems
to feel he has discharged his duty to his home
district and the nation by permitting himself
to become a rubber stamp.
We MUST “remember in November”. If members of Congress are so inconvenienced
by their responsibilities, they should step down,
or be voted down.

More unfortunately, the congressman is no different in his approach to life and responsibility than the voters who put him there.

You’re right, Clinton, that we must “remember in November.” Unfortunately, guys like Conyers represent such “safe” districts that the likelihood of their constituents voting them out are slim to none. Such “safe” Congressmen sometimes don’t even have an opposition candidate to run against them (this has been the case for a guy like Charlie Rangel for quite a while) because the opposition party sees it as a waste of time and money.
Still, you’re right. It shouldn’t stop us from trying to work against these guys on our own.
