The World featured my recent post reacting to medical marijuana being recommended by some doctors as a “treatment” for ADHD in an article focusing on marijuana used medicinally on children. That’s always cool. But I mention it primarily because the article reports that some parents are apparently giving it to their autistic kids in hope that it will help.  From the story:

The battle over medical marijuana has shifted to a new front with reports that California clinics have been prescribing pot to patients as young as 14 to treat ADHD symptoms, while parents are feeding kids as young as 9 pot-infused cookies as a last resort to help them cope with autism. Proponents of cannabis for kids say it can also help treat cancer and AIDS symptoms. Opponents? “How many ways can one say ‘one of the worst ideas of all time?’” asks UC Berkeley psychologist Stephen Hinshaw. Is there ever a valid reason to prescribe pot for kids? (Watch one family’s success treating autism with marijuana)

This is getting out of hand. It is long past time for the Feds to change the drug’s classification in the Controlled Substances Act and permit testing to see which conditions cannabis can–and just as importantly, which it can’t–treat, and then permit or deny it accordingly.

I totally agree with your call for new scheduling of cannabis. Only unfettered testing will allow science to weigh-in, pro or con, on its use. However, I suspect that the reason for the government’s resistance to rigorous testing is the fear that true science will simply not support a position for continued prohibition.

It really is a shame that professional have not corrected the pro’s and con’s of this drug by now.

Whether, it is found to be helpful or not for some people, many will come close to ruinous life with this drug but who really cares?

I hope I’m not too far off topic when I say that’s it’s unbelievable the power of lobbyist nowadays who truly only care about their pocket books.

Wesley, it’s just not funny anymore!

    Peace

I agree with Brinna. Just about every presidency since Nixon has appointed a presidential committee to research the validity of prohibition and all of them found it to be a waste of resources.
It’s amusing that the AMA was against the criminalization of marijuana in the first place but has taken so long to demand research into it. Facts have always been scary to prohibitionists, and with reclassification, there will be many more for them to cope with.
This has always been a war fueled by propaganda. The inclusion of mass numbers of scientific studies will, most likely, be a devastating blow to the platform upon which this nation plans it’s drug war strategies.
