Arnold Schwarzenegger, my failure as a governor, has gone to Copenhagen to save the world. From the story:

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger told delegates that the “planetary transformation” needed to tackle climate change could not be the work of national governments alone. He said: “History tells us that movements begin with people, not governments, and when they become powerful enough, governments respond.” California has high levels of renewable energy and a burgeoning green technologies industry, and as the seventh largest economy in the world, Mr Schwarzenegger said he believed the state had the power to deliver change.

Here’s the thing, he completely failed California. We are imploding, with a $500 billion bond debt and budget deficits growing geometrically. The wheels are literally coming off, with no real way in sight to make repairs.

A large part of this is Arnold’s fault. He was elected to rein in a profligate legislature and control spending in a recall vote focused on who could best control the budget and get California on a sound fiscal setting.  When he ran into trouble politically on that score, he decided to go Green and make CA the “model” for fighting global warming in the world.  As a consequence we have refused to lease valuable oil tracts, that would have brought in a log of money to state coffers and reduced, over time, our national dependence on the Middle East.  It led to draconian regulations that have worsened our business climate and exacerbated our unemployment problem.  Green, in the current hysterical Save the planet!, iteration has hurt California, not helped it.

Arnold just wants to be liked by the “right” people, and the right people are all in Copenhagen.  This much I know: he has no business preaching proper governance and economics to anybody.

That’s a huge problem for ALL of the uber “green” crowd.

They “can’t see the forest for the trees!”

Amen to that. I supported him during the recall election, much to my sustained disappointment. I was naive—hopefully much less so now.

The recall was, likely, a change in a lifetime, hail-mary pass. Unfortunately, we Californians threw the ball the wrong direction, and to the opposing team.

Arnold has been, kindly, a disaster. Sure makes you wonder if we’ll end up with him as a senator. We’d certainly be getting what we deserve. Sadly.

The wheels are NOT literally coming off. They are FIGURATIVELY coming off. “Literally” means literally, literally. You cannot use the word to mean its opposite. This is what happerns when you are substantively correct, Wesley. You leave me nothing to argue with except how you say it.

Where’s Crrooz Boosta-MONtay when you need him?

Going off your point Daniel, I wonder how much effect popular culture has had in cementing a lot of radical environmentalism with even regular people who don’t follow politics. Nobody ever wants to be the insensitive curmudgeon at the Thanksgiving dinner table who thinks smog is okay.

When and how did they take over the popular culture? I grew up watching Captain Planet, so it was already there in the mid 90s.

When did they take pop culture? Late 80s. HOW did they take pop culture? Money. With enough money, you can convince under-educated and willfully ignorant people (making up nearly 90% of the american population) of just about anything. Check out statistics for the people that STILL believe that Iraq organized the operation to fly planes into the WTC, and compare the map to low scoring districts on standardized tests (and unfortunately Republican strongholds).
