Cherchez la Femme on the Spengler Blog

by David P. Goldman

A Google search turns up 75,000 hits for the search term "Michelle Antoinette." That's sub-viral, but still noteworthy. At the Huffington Post, one pundit denounces New York Daily News publisher Mort Zuckerman for a "hit piece on First Lady Michelle Obama," referring to the "modern-day Marie Antoinette" moniker for Mrs. Obama in an August 4 column by Andrea Tantaros.

Mrs. Obama's sense of timing was poor, and the Marbella trip was a political mistake, but what one makes of these things always is a matter of context. The context is that Obama's foreign and domestic policies both have blown up in his face. The economy looks terrible, as I said it would all along, with over a fifth of the workforce un- or underemployment, and a fifth of houses worth less than their mortgages. And after a year of trying to bash Israel into a peace deal with the Palestinians, Obama only has succeeded in strengthening Hamas and Hizbollah at the expense of both Israel and the Palestinian authority--in part because of his mishandling of Turkey's overreaching Islamist prime minister Tayyip Erdogan. And that's not counting the disaster that is Afghanistan, and the disaster that Iraq is about to become.

The Democratic Party is toast in the mid-term elections. And the center of the Democratic Party is having a bad case of buyer's remorse about their standard-bearer. Marty Peretz, the "Spine" columnist at the New Republic, famously dubbed the President a "narcissist" last year. Narcissists do not do well in a corner.  As I pointed out in response,
Peretz is on the right track, but he has not gotten to the heart of the matter yet... If Obama has a personality disorder—and I believe he does—it doesn’t quite fit the clinical description of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Narcissists do not empathize easily, but all the evidence suggests that Obama exudes empathy. That is why so many clever people—Peretz for example—convinced themselves he was on their side.

A narcissist would have written his own autobiography; Obama turned tapes and documents over to the former Weatherman terrorist Bill Ayers, now a professor of education in Chicago, and let Ayers write Dreams of My Father for him. Long rumored, this is confirmed by celebrity journalist Christopher Anderson in his new book, Barack and Michelle: Portrait of an American Marriage....

The problem may not be NPD, but something related. The standard psychiatric reference manual, the fourth edition of the  Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) “divides personality disorders into three clusters based on symptom similarities,” in the Wikipedia summary. “This clustering categorizes the narcissistic personality disorder as a cluster B personality disorder, those personality disorders having in common an excessive sense of self importance. Also in that cluster are the borderline personality disorder, the histrionic personality disorder and the antisocial personality disorder.”

Antisocial personality disorder, to quote DSM-IV, was “previously known as both psychopathic and Sociopathic personality disorder.  Like most personality disorders, there are many factors that may contribute to the development of symptoms.  Because the symptoms are long lasting, the idea that symptoms begin to emerge in childhood or at least adolescence is well accepted.  The negative consequences of such symptoms, however, may not show themselves until adulthood.”

Sociopaths and narcissists, in short, belong to the same cluster of personality disorders arising from “an excessive sense of self importance,” but there is a key difference: narcissists are so preoccupied with themselves that they cannot empathize; sociopaths willfully “disregard the rights of others,” according to DSM-IV. Typical is “a history of deceitfulness where the individual attempts to con people or use trickery for personal profit.” For the sociopath, the thrill lies in the deception and the sense of power it brings.

This is a question, not an answer: no man can look into another man's soul. But we are dealing with a man who was abandoned by three parents--dad, stepdad, and mom--to be raised by his grandparents. Neglected children, if they are clever, become adept at manipulating those around them, while at the same time searching for surrogates for the parents who dumped them. In a Feb. 26, 2008 "Spengler" essay, I conjectured that Barack Obama was deeply dependent on Michelle.  Obama the candidate brought to mind Tyrone Power's carnival mentalist in the 1947 noire film "Nightmare Alley." Power's character ended up as the geek.

How much failure can Obama tolerate? Until now he spent his entire life climbing the ladder of power without being called to account. The Republicans are too gentlemanly to probe; not so his fellow Democrats. If DSM-IV does in fact provide insights into Obama's character, the way to find out is to go after the strong woman in his life. That is why the ridicule of the First Lady may have broader significance.

The American political system has a brutal but thorough way of uncovering the character of a leader. Sometimes character flaws stay hidden until stress forces them out, in the case of Richard Nixon, for example. The hounds are nipping at Obama's heels; in fact, they have sunk their teeth into Michelle's.

Spengler:

I am no longer convinced by your ruling out of narcissistic personality disorder.

I don't think anyone now says that he shows empathy. Indeed the rote liberal media complaint seems to be that he is cold and distant.

His ability to allow self-deluded liberals to delude themselves is not rooted in empathy, but in cold blooded calculation. He long ago (starting I am sure at his fancy private high school in Hawaii) learned that he could play the "magic negro" and that white folks would tie themselves up in knots trying to give him things in order to assuage their own guilt.

As a psychological trait, it is more akin to the manipulativeness of borderlines than it is to empathy. It may also have roots in his childhood rejections and his strategies for forestalling future rejection.

As for his memoirs, I am sure that the reason he did not write them is that he does not know how to write. He got through his fancy schools by means of his manipulative talents, not that it takes much for a handsome young black man to manipulate white teachers. They will roll over, wiggle their tummies, and stick their legs in the air like over eager puppies without being asked. He probably never did the quantity of writing, correction, and rewriting that it takes to become a good writer.

He apparently had the first contract for the book terminated by the prospective publisher for being excessively late with the manuscript. He then took up Ayers on his offer to turn his pile of notes into a book out of sheer desperation, and probably believes in his own mind the all that Ayers did was "give him a little editorial help".

But, having reached a diagnosis, I am not sure that it helps. Dr. Krauthammer, who really is a psychiatrist, said that BO will not back off and change like Clinton did after 94, but that he will double down on doctrinaire liberal (actually socialist) policies after the fall elections.

I agree that he is rigid, and he is a doctrinaire socialist. The root of the problem is that he spent his entire life inside the leftist borg, and he simply cannot think about things in any other way.

His supporters felt that his superficial fluency was, along with his academic history, proof of his intelligence. I doubt it. I have heard nothing come out of his mouth when unscripted that demonstrates the type of intelligence that would allow a man who has worked himself into a number of blind allies to revisit all of his premises and thoughts and totally restructure them in order to save the day.

Sexy Sadie what have you done
You made a fool of everyone
You made a fool of everyone
Sexy Sadie ooh what have you done.

Sexy Sadie you broke the rules
You layed it down for all to see
You layed it down for all to see
Sexy Sadie ooh you broke the rules.

One sunny day the world was waiting for a lover
She came along and turned on everyone
Sexy Sadie, the greatest of them all.

Sexy Sadie how did you know
The world was waiting just for you
The world was waiting just for you
Sexy Sadie ooh how did you know.

Sexy Sadie you'll get yours yet
However big you think you are
However big you think you are
Sexy Sadie ooh you'll get yours yet.

We gave her everything we owned just to sit at her table
Just a smile would lighten everything
Sexy Sadie she's the latest and the greatest of them all.

Not even Walter Mitty...

Postby Booklady » Tue Aug 10, 2010 11:01 pm

Let's face it, the Obama's lead a charmed life; and that's why the FLOTUS is so carefree in her choice of luxury vacation spots during a recession that has hobbled 20% of the workforce. They are both living in a different world than the rest of America--they live in a gated community in Mount Olympus. How else can one explain his meteoric flight and ascendancy as POTUS?

Only in a novel, would an unknown young person accomplish so much in so little time, without actually doing a whole lot.
Not even Walter Mitty could have day dreamed so much and so well!

but the fall will be the hardest... Hubris is aways punished in Greek drama.

Not being Walter Mitty, I dream of having his grades in these fancy schools and college made public... I am sure we'll see something less than the fabled intelligence.

The shallow, narcissistic nature of Michelle, as well as her judgement is summed up here

Michelle Obama is receiving much criticism from the press for wearing expensive Lanvin Leather Sneakers (which retail for $630, but are on sale for $504 at BlueFly.com) while volunteering at a Washington D.C. food bank last week. Michelle was previously praised for her affordable fashion sense. I do think Michelle is wearing a J.Crew sweater if that’s any consolation.

they both don't get it;

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 05684.html

...... While President Obama's wife and younger daughter were conducting international relations in Majorca on Sunday with Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, the commander in chief was at home hosting a fantasy camp for himself. He and his buddies had a birthday weekend barbecue and basketball game with LeBron James, Alonzo Mourning, Magic Johnson and other legends of the sport.

The day before, it was a four-hour golf outing for Obama and the boys. On Monday, he hosted the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints at the White House and talked about his own exploits on the gridiron last year with Saints quarterback Drew Brees. "He tossed me a nice tight spiral that I then lateraled to a kid on [Dallas Cowboys linebacker] DeMarcus Ware's shoulders," the president recalled. "I also want to point out I beat [Pittsburgh Steelers safety] Troy Polamalu over the middle on that throw." Obama turned to Brees. "You remember?"

It's a good thing Michelle Obama is back from her foreign trip. Otherwise Obama might have already invited the networks to film him playing H-O-R-S-E on the White House basketball court. Oh, wait: He already did that, in the spring, when basketball star and CBS Sports announcer Clark Kellogg shot some televised hoops with him.

According to unofficial presidential statistician Mark Knoller of CBS News, Obama has left the White House to play basketball 16 times so far, in addition to the countless times he has played on his home court. He's shot 44 rounds of golf, gone fishing and played tennis. Total sporting-related events hosted at the White House: 45. That's about six times the number of news conferences he has held.

He's been to see the Nationals twice this year, the last time in June with Malia and Sasha to see the Nats play Obama's White Sox. Last week, he took Sasha to see the Washington Mystics of the WNBA at Verizon Center.

Obama's foes have mocked him for playing golf more often than his sports-mad predecessor, who played only 24 rounds during his entire eight-year presidency. "Obama skips Polish funeral, heads to golf course," was one Washington Times headline. Liberals who once mocked George W. Bush's "watch this drive" moment on the golf course now speak of the need for Obama to clear his head.

Whatever the merits of head clearing (or in Bush's case, brush clearing), Obama's bachelor birthday weekend at the White House set some sort of new standard for presidential game playing: the golf at Andrews with his buddies, then basketball Sunday with pros (and former pros) such as Grant Hill and Bill Russell (and Kobe Bryant watching from the sideline), and finally, first thing Monday morning, the adoration of the Saints.

Michael, Marbella as well as Torremolinos have been passe since the 70's. But it is still a place where celebrities and the nouveau riche love to gather to be photographed; it's said that in Marbella Hola Magazine has a paparazzi in ever corner.

The hotel Michelle rented out for the week, Villa Padierna] a five star hotel operated by RitzCarlton, is very exclusive, as well as expensive establishment; this, in and of itself, is not the point, one expects the FLOTUS to stay at a congenial location. It was the combination of Michelle's preaching to Americans to visit the Gulf Beaches, which have been woefully hurt by the dearth of tourism; and the timing of vacationing in luxurious environments when so many workers are unable to pay their utilities, much less take a vacation. This drew criticism from friends like Maureen Dowd, and Megan McArdle from the Atlantic, who was horrified at Michelle's poor timing.

I agree, Pasta, it will be interesting to discover Obama's grades. But it's way too late for us. Personally, I agree with Roger L. Simon from Pajamas Media, I think Obama is not going to run in 2012. I will be very surprised if it is otherwise.

I don't know whether Simon is right about 2012, but the possibility of an early psychological implosion can't be excluded.

Charleston: You missed the best line in the WaPo article you linked:

"The jock in chief, getting his fill of sports?" By Dana Milbank, Washington Post Staff Writer on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at P. A02

"You must always remember that the president is about 6."

This advice was offered more than 100 years ago by a British friend of Teddy Roosevelt's. The nation has matured since then, and so has the presidency. Now the president is about 12.

* * *

Boys will be boys -- even if they're presidents.

* * *

The Super Bowl champs then watched Obama fly off in his helicopter, which would take him to his waiting 747. For a 12-year-old president, it doesn't get any better than this.

Watching FLOTUS & POTUS live it up beyonds the dreams of most Americans reminds of a few of my own white trash aquaintences, they some how fall into an extra $200 or so, and all of a sudden they spend like there is no end to their wealth. Then when the money suddenly runs out, they are honestly shocked.

I think the analysis of Obama not running in 012 maybe accurate. He has already stated that he would rather be a "good president for one term" rather than a "poor president for two terms." Of course the implication in his statement is that his opinon of his presidency overrides the opinions of those who would decide not to vote for his second term.

PhysOrg - J Person and Soc Psych: Research shows what you say about others says a lot about you

How positively you see others is linked to how happy, kind-hearted and emotionally stable you are, according to new research by a Wake Forest University psychology professor.

"Your perceptions of others reveal so much about your own personality," says Dustin Wood, assistant professor of psychology at Wake Forest and lead author of the study, about his findings. By asking study participants to each rate positive and negative characteristics of just three people, the researchers were able to find out important information about the rater's well-being, mental health, social attitudes and how they were judged by others.

The study also found that how positively you see other people shows how satisfied you are with your own life, and how much you are liked by others.

In contrast, negative perceptions of others are linked to higher levels of narcissism and antisocial behavior. "A huge suite of negative personality traits are associated with viewing others negatively," Wood says. "The simple tendency to see people negatively indicates a greater likelihood of depression and various personality disorders." Given that negative perceptions of others may underlie several personality disorders, finding techniques to get people to see others more positively could promote the cessation of behavior patterns associated with several different personality disorders simultaneously, Wood says.
