The President's Pastoral Emails on the Spengler Blog

by David P. Goldman

Why do between a fifth and a quarter of Americans think that Barack Obama is a Muslim? I was interviewed this morning by one new outlet on this topic. Perhaps 10% of the population listens to the talk-radio conspiracy theorists who actually believe that Obama is a covert Muslim, which of course is wrong; as I wrote elsewhere, he is not even a Muslim.

Nonetheless, the fact that Obama prominently and incessantly praises Islam while showing no interest in Christianity easily might lead the casual observer to believe that he is a Muslim. Unlike past presidents who professed Christianity, he does not attend church. Earlier this year NBC's Matt Lauer asked Obama why he has not chosen a church to attend. Obama said that his presence might distract other parishioners--a compunction not shared by his predecessors. Instead, he makes do with a daily devotional email from a group of pastors. Christianity by Blackberry, one might call it. No wonder folks are confused.

Subject: Pastor Email Team Subterfuge

Your attention please. When I assume office, I can't be bothered with church attendance. Jeremiah "Under the Bus" Wright is but one reason why.

Instead, I'm asking some attention-starved, sycophant pastors to apply for the priviledge of participating in a team of pastors emailing me daily devotions. Your participation in PETS will allow me to maintain a fig-leaf of christianity in case I'm asked about church attendence.

You are encouraged to apply to be selected for his honor. Naturally, there will be requirements. First and foremost, any public release of the devotional content could prove controversial and without explicit, prior, written, Whitehouse approval is strictly forbidden. Obviously, any subsequent correspondence between myself and the authors would be similarly embargoed, except of course there won't be any subsequent correspondence, or even acknowledgment of receipt.

You may, however, disclose your selection as one of my PETS. I hope it goes without saying that this public opportunity to puff-up your already inflated public image will be your only compensation.

Please note that in the event of personal moral scandal, some or all of you may be required to carry my water for me--including defending me publicly, and/or arranging to visit me (suitably sombre expressions required) at times and places TBA. Compensation for time and travel under these circumstances may be covered--though perhaps not overtly.

If you have any questions or concerns with the above, you are clearly not suitable as one of my PETS. All others please apply ASAP.

Discreetly,

BHO

So you think? But do you actually believe this sort of nonsense? Oh, I forgot that all is fair in love and in war. Now, I imagine you sitting in a corner in a tight fitting woollen coat mumbling to your self as you feed the dirty pidgeons and blaming Obama for everything that has gone wrong under the sun.

And by the way, are you Czech?

I think you have too much time on your hand. Have you considered applying to be one of those pastors that Obama supposedly communes with by e-mail? I know that you evince some Christian sympathies but it is still not clear to me if you are a heretic or a murderous redneck who like many in the West uses christianity to advance their personal and worldly ambitions.

I'll have to defend Obama on this. Ronald Reagan didn't attend Church because of the same stated reasons. I do believe he started regular attendance after he left. Imagine the notion of trying to attend services with a convoy of Secret Service men? To me, Clinton attending church was merely an opportunity to be seen on camera with an extra big bible.

With Reagan there was never a doubt that his heart lay with America and the American ideal. With Obama, that just isn't the case.

All good points.

Not that blackberry was available, but I can't see Reagan countering by pointing to the daily email devotional thingy.

What about the Obama family? The wife and children? Don't they attend a church as they did back in Chicago?

General de Gaulle, despite, or, perhaps, because of, over 30 assassination attempts, still attended 6.30 mass, nearly every morning of his presidency.

And a mighty scandal it was... Laïcité etc...

I remember when he visited Mexico and went to Mass, the Mexican president told he couldn't because of the laicity law...

Ummm... I suggest, click User Control Panel, then Friends & Foes tab. (Poorly named I might add.) Then click Manage Foes. Add selected user names.

I don't use the Friends feature, as I consider anyone not on Foes a friend (or potentially one). As to Foes, putting someone on that list doesn't really make them a foe, per se. Their posts are selectively ignored, unless you go out of your way to open them. So it really isn't a Foes feature. It's an Ignore feature. A really useful one. Especially if you don't have too much time on your hand[s].
