I’m not entirely sure the president hasn’t reached outside of the scope of his job in setting emission standards – oh, what am I talking about – Obama is the Imperial President; the scope of his job extends to any place he says it does! He can do anything he wants to; (cuz he won) and the press won’t complain. If he wants to come over to your house tomorrow and inspect your pantry shelves to make sure you’re getting enough vitamin C and not too much fat, they’ll be championing him for it. Safety is gonna suffer, but it’s Obama! Yay! Car prices are gonna go up, along with gas prices and taxes but it’s Obama! Yaaaay!

Some soccer moms will have to give up hulking SUVs. Carpenters will still haul materials around in pickup trucks, but they will cost more. Nearly everybody else will drive smaller cars, and more of them will run on electricity. The higher mileage and emissions standards set by the Obama administration on Tuesday, which begin to take effect in 2012 and are to be achieved by 2016, will transform the American car and truck fleet.
Now, bear in mind, this is reality we’re talking about, not some theory, not “expert conjecture.” This is reality, and there is not a negative word to be found in the article; the press is in full rah-cheerleader mode, even though there is ample evidence that this move will result in serious job losses.
Quite different from this headline circa 2005 (back when everyone was working): There Go 800,000 Jobs Out the Door.
That story was a theory about what might happen if certain other things happened. It was, in fact, a headline and story meant to talk down the bustling economy of four years ago, when the president was called an “Imperialist” while taking care to work within the law and within the scope of his job.
Pretty interesting. The president who voted “present” more than anything else while in congress, and who has never run so much as a hot-dog stand in terms of real, income-generating business, is taking charge of the auto industry and the banks. He ignores what experienced businessmen and job-creators tell him, punishes the folks who play by the rules, and moves forward with impunity. The “stimulus” is not stimulating. There will be no job-recovery, he announces, for at least another year. The Bush tax-cuts will be allowed to end – an automatic tax-increase across the board. State taxes and fees are ruinous. Cap and Trade will bust our personal banks. And the press?
The press says, “but it’s Obama! Yaaaaaay! He knows everything about everything! Yaaaaay!”
Hell, he’s even a theologian, now. Maybe Fr. Z is right.

I couldn’t help but notice that the administration hasn’t seemed to take into account the people who drive their old cars into the ground, or those who drive older cars. Lots of people drive used cars that they paid $700-1200. They have big, dependable cars they bought from friends-of-a-friend or inherited from an elderly relative. Others have low-mileage older cars they drive on errands a few times a month. So do they get hit with charges on their paid-off Oldsmobile until they find a used Saturn?
I’m thinking that there will be a new government program. Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Finance companies like GMAC must offer auto loans to low-income people who don’t necessarily have good credit. ;0

My son drives a truck for his job, which is taking a hot because of the policies promulgated by The One, and now he will have to pay extra because he drives a truck?

Few seemed to grasp, or to care, about what Hillary Clinton meant about taking things away from the American Public.
Some of us, who have lived in socialist failures in Europa, have watched the same oppressive efforts before. It is amazing to note, after the disasters in California, New Jersey, Michigan, etc., that the Democratic Partisans who condescend all else, have yet to realize these suffocating tax and spend programs always raise the cost of living to all, hurting the poor the very most.
Obama is a prime example of living ideology, having no relation with reality.
What is truly concerning, progress – development – growth – enlightenment, etc., may all suffer.
If the Government takes over Health Care, look for some needed cure to be delayed for decades…

Technological breakthroughs will hardly be affordable to any average citizen of the US Socialist State.
Unions will never be happy, for the intense rise in the cost of living, due to the massive Government spending and taxation, will cancel any tiny bump in pay or pension via their devotion to the corrupt DNC Machine.
But what can one expect, from a President who compares fellow Americans working in the Mortgage and Banking Industry to “suicide bombers” ?

Regarding simply driving an old or used car — have no fear, they will simply impose emission standards that will force people with older cars to pay an extra couple thousand a year or otherwise simply refuse to allow them to renew their registrations, effectively precluding them from even selling it (like they are doing with the Chrysler ex-dealers).

Oh great. I drive a 1992 12 passenger Chevy van, because we have 10 family members and need a reliable vehicle we can fix ourselves if need be. ANY kind of new tax on our vehicle would make our lives much much more difficult.
We aren’t quite poor now, but we absolutely will be by the time this socialist nutjob and his cronies get out of office. How I WISH we had a real Sam Adams or Patrick Henry in the wings.
