About the David J. Engeseth Senior Leadership Award

Founded by Nina Cunningham in 2006, the David J. Engeseth Senior Leadership Award is presented in May of each year to a deserving Wheaton Academy student in honor of David J. Engeseth, an extraordinary leader who died of cancer in 2006. His widow, Joan, presents the award each year at Wheaton Academy’s annual Award Ceremony. The award committee will welcome the past 10 years of award recipients during the First Things panel discussion.

The award is given to a senior of exceptional personal character who plans to attend a Christian college, with preference given toward attendance at Taylor University, Trinity International University or Wheaton College, but not to the exclusion of other Christian colleges. The award may also be given to a student who plans to enter military service or a military academy.

The award recipient will exhibit leadership qualities in a Christian spirit throughout his or her career at Wheaton Academy. The student will participate enthusiastically in extra-curricular activities, but remain committed to academic excellence. Leadership will be broadly apparent in academics and in sports or other performance activity, where the student is attentive to the well-being of others. The moral strength of the recipient suggests high potential for leadership in future endeavors and for representing the principles to which Wheaton Academy is dedicated.
