A 40-Something Cardinal?

In recent centuries, the College of Cardinals has not been noted for its boyishness. Indeed, one of the human fascinations of a conclave is that it’s a rare opportunity to see a deliberation-with-consequences conducted by elderly men. This can have its down-side: According to one story, perhaps apocryphal, a very old cardinal kept writing “Achille Ratti” on his ballot throughout the conclave of 1958; Ratti had died in 1939 as Pius XI. Whether that fragment of conclave lore is true or not, Paul VI’s restriction of the papal electoral franchise to cardinals who were not yet 80 was presumably intended to forestall any such difficulty in the future.

There have been modern exceptions to the general rule of cardinals being typically created in their 60s or 70s. Rafael Merry del Val, Secretary of State to Pius X, became a cardinal at 38 in 1903. Achille Lienart, bishop of Lille and a leader of the reformist party at Vatican II, was named a cardinal at 46 in 1930. Giuseppe Siri, archbishop of Genoa and, by some accounts, Pius XII’s preferred successor, was created cardinal in 1953 at 47. Trying to bring some comfort to the stricken city of Sarajevo in 1994, John Paul II named its archbishop, Vinko Puljic, a cardinal at 49.

This exclusive club of modern, 40-something cardinals is likely to gain a new member in the next few years: Sviatoslav Shevchuk, who was chosen in March by the Synod of the Greek Catholic Church of Ukraine as that Church’s new leader, or major-archbishop; his election was subsequently ratified by Pope Benedict XVI. Major-Archbishop Shevchuk is 40, and if he becomes a cardinal shortly after his predecessor, Cardinal Lubomir Husar, turns 80 in 2013, Shevchuk will be the youngest member of the College of Cardinals in over a century.

I had the opportunity to take the measure of the new leader of the world’s Ukrainian Greek Catholics 10 days after his election, during a 45-minute conversation in Rome that covered a lot of territory: relations between the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and Russian Orthodoxy; relations between the UGCC and the various Orthodox jurisdictions in Ukraine; relations between the UGCC and the Holy See. Major-Archbishop Shevchuk is an impressive personality—fluent in several languages, theologically and politically alert, good-humored despite the weight of responsibility that had fallen on him.

I was particularly struck by his calm. Less than two weeks before we met at a Ukrainian Catholic center near Santa Maria dei Monti, this former seminary teacher had been bishop of the Ukrainian diaspora community in Argentina. Over the previous 10 days, and to everyone’s surprise (including his own), he had been elected to succeed Cardinal Husar, a man of extraordinary moral authority in Ukraine; then he had been enthroned in Kyiv; then he had immediately come to Rome, to affirm his communion with the Pope and to undertake a whirlwind visit of the Roman Curia. Major-Archbishop Shevchuk had every right to be a bit frayed at the edges when we met. But he was perfectly self-collected, full of a quiet energy, and eager to share ideas about his Church, the largest Eastern-rite Catholic Church and one that lives, as he put it, in a “very difficult neighborhood.”

Since his enthronement, Major-Archbishop Shevchuk has reached out to the Orthodox communities in Ukraine as well as to the leadership of Russian Orthodoxy, making clear his interests in genuine dialogue, real problem-solving, and joint work to repair the vast human damage done to Ukraine by 70-plus years of communism. Whether his open hand will be met by a similar openness from Moscow remains to be seen, but the open hand has been extended.

Ten years ago, Blessed John Paul II came to Ukraine and won the hearts of its people, challenging Greek Catholics, Latin Catholics, and Ukrainian Orthodox believers to work together to realize what he called Ukraine’s “European vocation.” Major-Archbishop Shevchuk will play a considerable role in addressing that challenge. He and his Church deserve the unwavering support of Catholics around the world.

All right, George, what exactly is Ukraine's "European vocation" and what, if anything, does that have to do with Christ?

Joseph D'Hippolito, I am afraid, the European vocation here means being not-Russian, thus refuting the thesis about 'the open hand extended' to the Russian Orthodoxy and the Ukrainian Orthodoxy of the Moscow Patriarchy.

There have been much younger ccardinals than that.

His Royal Highness, Henry Benedict Stuart, the Cardinal Duke of York (brother of Bonnie Prince Charlie) was created a Cardinal Deacon of San Marino in Portico on the 3rd July 1747, aged 22. He had been born on the 6 Mach 1725.

He subsequently became Cardinal Priest in 1748, aged 23, having been ordained priest on the 1st September and consecrated Archbishop of Corinth on the 2nd October.

He was created Cardinal Bishop of Tusculum and Frascati on 13 July 1761, aged 36.

After his brother’s death in 1788, he was addressed as “Majesty” by his household and had a medal struck as King Henry IX of England, bearing the words, “Not accepted by men but chosen by the will of God.” No further recognition did he desire or demand, being content to pray for the Conversion of England and “to place himself and his cause in the hands of the Almighty to deal with as He thought fit.”

On 26 September 1803, His Majesty became Cardinal Bishop of Ostia and Dean of the Sacred College (the two posts being always united), aged 78.

His Majesty died on the 13th July 1807, ten days after celebrating his Diamond Jubilee as a Cardinal, a rare distinction. He was 82.

From the perspective of the Western Church, it is appropriate that the Head of a numerous Catholic Church of a large Christian nation should be a cardinal. Doubtless, many in Ukraine would count it an honor for Sviatoslav Shevchuk and for his Church that, as cardinal, he be counted among the counselors of the Roman Pontiff. However, from the perspective of Eastern ecclesiology, it is an ambivalent honor for a major archbishop (or patriarch), who is Head and Father of an autonomous (sui iuris) Church to be appointed a permanent advisor to another Head of an autonomous Church - even if he be the First. In its own way the Roman Holy See recognizes this, albeit partially, when according to protocol it gives priority to patriarchs before the cardinals...

Does the "European vocation" have anything to do w/the European Union? If so, then what does that have to do with Christ?

Dear Joseph,
I understand your point and all things being equal it would certainly be a valid one. However, Pope John Paul II understood Ukraine’s history, having shared some of it. In that context, I understood it (as I believe most self-aware Ukrainian Greek Catholics would) to be an allusion to the fact that Ukrainian Catholics have experienced nothing but persecution (including multiple attempts at liquidating the UGCC) from their neighbor to the North and East for the last decades and centuries. Certainly they have not encountered Christ there, put understatedly (except in isolated individuals). Looking westward (actually, all of Ukraine is within Europe to begin with) they have found far more religious acceptance and tolerance (even if mixed with materialism or at times a lack of understanding of their rite), and at the very least neighbors who do not wish to outright conquer or devour them, both religiously and politically (currently the same thing within the northeast neighbor, as is painfully obvious). Perhaps one day this will change; let us pray and hope it will. In sum, Pope John Paul II could care less about the EU, but he did care about the welfare of his flock. And that has a lot to do with Christ.
