Browsing around, I spotted a link to a Woman’s Day article with the headline 8 Good-for-You Indulgences. And a question recurred to me—one that perhaps you can answer, Sally.

A friend of mine just made a little chunk of money betting that Citibank stock wouldn’t fall any lower—a successful investment for which he may well need some forgiveness. And after reading Gary Anderson’s fascinating essay on treasures in heaven, I thought I’d recommend that my friend spend his windfall on some indulgences.

But where exactly do I go to buy indulgences? I mean, I know the old Protestant complaint—cause of the Reformation, according to some—that Catholics think they can buy their way to heaven. In a lifetime of Catholic practice, however, I’ve never actually seen an indulgence for sale. Shouldn’t the Manual of Indulgences from the bishops’ conference contain, like, advertisements or something?
