From my inbox, a press release about a new book, in which “Author discusses science, psychology and spiritual enlightenment.” And why not? “Imagine what your life would be like without fear. Imagine living a life filled with love, peace and understanding.”
Who could object? The author, the press release continues, has “summarized his 40 years of research on the subject of how people can reach enlightenment.” He has, you see, a ” knack for making complex things simple,” and in his new book, “he explains that not only is enlightenment possible, but that enlightenment is our birthright, and its not hard to attainwe already have it. We just need to uncover it.”
The press release concludes, “Can we interest you in taking a look and possibly doing a story or an interview”?
Not today, I think. Not today.
We launched the First Things 2023 Year-End Campaign to keep articles like the one you just read free of charge to everyone.
Measured in dollars and cents, this doesn't make sense. But consider who is able to read First Things: pastors and priests, college students and professors, young professionals and families. Last year, we had more than three million unique readers on firstthings.com.
Informing and inspiring these people is why First Things doesn't only think in terms of dollars and cents. And it's why we urgently need your year-end support.
Will you give today?
