For our midwestern readers, at least those on the eastern side of the Midwest, news of two conferences being held in Pittsburgh:
The first, which starts this afternoon, is the Newman Association of America’s annual conference . The main speakers include Fr. Ian Ker, author of the major biography of Newman and several other major Newman scholars, as well as the deacon whose healing was the miracle that led to Newman’s beatification.
The second, from a different point on the ecclesiastical spectrum, is a conference on the Swedish theologian Bo Giertz’s The Hammer of God , sponsored by the International Giertz Society . It is being held on September 14th at First Trinity Lutheran Church on North Neville Street. The announcement didn’t list a website. While I have you, can I ask you something? I’ll be quick.
Twenty-five thousand people subscribe to First Things. Why can’t that be fifty thousand? Three million people read First Things online like you are right now. Why can’t that be four million?
Let’s stop saying “can’t.” Because it can. And your year-end gift of just $50, $100, or even $250 or more will make it possible.
How much would you give to introduce just one new person to First Things? What about ten people, or even a hundred? That’s the power of your charitable support.
