Even on a normal day I don’t really like talking about politics. But I really, really hate talking about politics on election day. Unfortunately, that’s about all that anyone wants to discuss. And its almost all you’ll hear about on the blogs, radio, and cable news  for the next twenty-four hours.

But there are more pressing matters we should be concerned about than whether our next batch of corruptocrats will have an R or a D after their name on the C-Span2 chiron. We have concerns about serious issues—child labor and violence and disease and people touching monkeys. While other bloggers will be encouraging you to vote, I want to encourage you to spend time thinking about what’s wrong with the world today. And to implore you to stop touching monkeys.

Dear Reader,

While I have you, can I ask you something? I’ll be quick.

Twenty-five thousand people subscribe to First Things. Why can’t that be fifty thousand? Three million people read First Things online like you are right now. Why can’t that be four million?

Let’s stop saying “can’t.” Because it can. And your year-end gift of just $50, $100, or even $250 or more will make it possible.

How much would you give to introduce just one new person to First Things? What about ten people, or even a hundred? That’s the power of your charitable support.
