Vatican City has been crowned the Greenest State In the World by . . . the Vatican newspaper. According to design blog Inhabitat :
Last year Inhabitat reported that the Vatican was spending $660 million on a massive 100MW photovoltaic installation that would effectively be Europes largest solar power plant. Now complete and in operation, the installation of this array has not only made Vatican City the first solar powered nation state in the world, but according to the states official newspaper, it is now the greenest state in the world . [emphasis in original]
The reason that is almost certainly true: Vatican City is the smallest state in the world.
The Vatican cafeteria is also planning on installing a solar heating system that will be able to provide heating and cooling for staff. It is even noted that the Popes summer residence is being outfitted to harness the methane generated by the horse stables!
Two reasons that that might be true: (1) Horses are gassy, and (2) despite it being a claim made by LOsservatore Romano , it is not about pop culture.*
*The list of questionable pop culture claims made by the Vatican paper that have been reported on this blog include:
- Homer Simpson is Catholic.
- The Blues Brothers is a “Catholic Classic”.
- David Crosbys If I Could Only Remember My Name” is one of the top ten rock and pop albums of all time.

Let’s stop saying “can’t.” Because it can. And your year-end gift of just $50, $100, or even $250 or more will make it possible.
How much would you give to introduce just one new person to First Things? What about ten people, or even a hundred? That’s the power of your charitable support.
