1. For those who have expressed a kind of Porcher concern that I would die if snowed in, be reassured that, because the power stayed on, I have survived. It’s true that I lack Porcher/motorcycle maintenance skills, but they probably won’t be missed this time. The private road outside my hillside home (Tea Partiers be aware—I don’t cotton to those discredited government roads) is impassable, and there’s no reason to believe that it will get much better for the next few below-freezing days. But we have food and heat, and classes don’t start for two days (and I may think of something—employ sophisticated mental labor—before then).

2. Also be aware—there’s Darwinian and Darwinian Larry stuff by ME here—including a link to an interesting response by Larry.

Dear Reader,

While I have you, can I ask you something? I’ll be quick.

Twenty-five thousand people subscribe to First Things. Why can’t that be fifty thousand? Three million people read First Things online like you are right now. Why can’t that be four million?

Let’s stop saying “can’t.” Because it can. And your year-end gift of just $50, $100, or even $250 or more will make it possible.

How much would you give to introduce just one new person to First Things? What about ten people, or even a hundred? That’s the power of your charitable support.
