This summer will see two fine opportunities for anyone interested in the riches of the Catholic tradition.

The first—a philosophy workshop on Thomas Aquinas and contemporary philosophy—will take place in late June (23rd through 26th) at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York.

Sponsored by the Catholic and Dominican Institute at Mount Saint Mary College, as well as the Thomistic Institute at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C, the workshop will feature presentations by an impressive group of Catholic philosophers: Fred Feddoso, Joshua Hochschild, Gyula Klima, and John O’Callaghan, along with a bunch of Dominicans—James Brent, Lawrence Dewan, Charles Morerod, and Thomas Joseph White—seasoned by a Jesuit, Joe Koterski. This represents an excellent opportunity to participate in a high-level discussion of philosophy keyed to the interests and concerns of men and women of faith.

The second opportunity takes place at the end of the summer (August 8th through 14th) at Portsmouth Abbey School in Portsmouth, RI. It’s a graduate seminar, “Catholic Social Thought: A Critical Investigation,” led by First Things stalwart, Russell Hittenger. Catholic social doctrine is one of the most important contributions that the Catholic tradition has made to modern intellectual culture—a contribution not yet fully received. Russell Hittenger provides expert guidance. Pitched toward graduate students, this seminar requires application in advance (due April 1st.)

You can download an application on the Lumen Christi website by looking here for upcoming events.

Or you can email the folks at the Lumen Christi Institute at info@lumenchristi.org

Both are great opportunities, highly recommended.

Dear Reader,

While I have you, can I ask you something? I’ll be quick.

Twenty-five thousand people subscribe to First Things. Why can’t that be fifty thousand? Three million people read First Things online like you are right now. Why can’t that be four million?

Let’s stop saying “can’t.” Because it can. And your year-end gift of just $50, $100, or even $250 or more will make it possible.

How much would you give to introduce just one new person to First Things? What about ten people, or even a hundred? That’s the power of your charitable support.
