Every August since 1998, Beloit College has released the Beloit College Mindset List , providing perspective for us old timers on how students just entering college see the world. Every August since 2009 I post the list and every August (since 2009) readers complain about how dumb it is (as one commenter wrote, these are the “stupidest of the lists that various obscure colleges publish in an attempt to get publicity on a slow news day.”)

But its a tradition (3 years running!) and a slow news day (6 more days in August!) so I’m posting it anyway. Here are my favorites for the the Class of 2015:

2. Ferris Bueller and Sloane Peterson could be their parents.

4. The only significant labor disputes in their lifetimes have been in major league sports.

5. There have nearly always been at least two women on the Supreme Court, and women have always commanded U.S. Navy ships.

15. O.J. Simpson has always been looking for the killers of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

28. Jimmy Carter has always been a smiling elderly man who shows up on TV to promote fair elections and disaster relief.

31. Women have always been kissing women on television.

37. Music has always been available via free downloads.

40. Sears has never sold anything out of a Big Book that could also serve as a doorstop.

64. Altar girls have never been a big deal.

Dear Reader,

While I have you, can I ask you something? I’ll be quick.

Twenty-five thousand people subscribe to First Things. Why can’t that be fifty thousand? Three million people read First Things online like you are right now. Why can’t that be four million?

Let’s stop saying “can’t.” Because it can. And your year-end gift of just $50, $100, or even $250 or more will make it possible.

How much would you give to introduce just one new person to First Things? What about ten people, or even a hundred? That’s the power of your charitable support.
