1. Newt is a disreputable sophist who sold his soul to shill for causes he couldn’t have believed in, corrupt causes mainly enabled by Democrats that came close to ruining our country.

2. But, as the great man said, he’s still WINNING. And unlike Charlie, he seems substance-free and relatively in personal control.

3. I see the conservative intellectuals—those who write for FORBES and stuff—warming up to him. Newt is Populist (equality of opportunity), Progressive (technology and economic freedom), and Conservative (aggressively patriotic and political and sensibly populist of social issues like religion, family, life etc., free from libertarian elitism and isolationism). Some say Newt’s campaign has been crazy incompetent and he’s just lucky. It could be his support has remained latent and somewhat ashamed and is now starting to explode. He may be crazy like a Newt.

4. So there are reasons why Pete’s “listen to me” doesn’t get listened to.

5. It goes without saying that the president couldn’t be happier. His reelection probably depends on his opponent looking repulsive or too incompetent to lead to the swing voters.

Dear Reader,

While I have you, can I ask you something? I’ll be quick.

Twenty-five thousand people subscribe to First Things. Why can’t that be fifty thousand? Three million people read First Things online like you are right now. Why can’t that be four million?

Let’s stop saying “can’t.” Because it can. And your year-end gift of just $50, $100, or even $250 or more will make it possible.

How much would you give to introduce just one new person to First Things? What about ten people, or even a hundred? That’s the power of your charitable support.
