1. There’s another poll confirming the modestly significant Santorum surge in Iowa. Not only are Rick and Ron both authentic, they are both very well organized and have put huge face time in Iowa. The polls show Romney and Paul tied, but that means Ron has a slight edge with the enthusiasm and organization advantages. But maybe we’re looking at close to a 3-way tie. The only mo’ there is, after all, is with Santorum.

2. Huntsman has a toughly negative ad against Paul and his newsletters on the web. But the bigger news is that Paul, quite unlike Newt and Mitt, is not under savage media attack otherwise. That means, of course, that nobody yet is taking Paul seriously as a possible nominee.

3. There’s a poll that shows Romney up 6 over Obama. That’s the first Republican lead beyond the margin of error, and the first time a living, breathing Republican has polled as well as “generic Republican.” Yes, I’ve read all the articles on the myth of Romney’s electability and half-way believe them.

Dear Reader,

While I have you, can I ask you something? I’ll be quick.

Twenty-five thousand people subscribe to First Things. Why can’t that be fifty thousand? Three million people read First Things online like you are right now. Why can’t that be four million?

Let’s stop saying “can’t.” Because it can. And your year-end gift of just $50, $100, or even $250 or more will make it possible.

How much would you give to introduce just one new person to First Things? What about ten people, or even a hundred? That’s the power of your charitable support.
