1. Well that was quick. Perry is already putting out a hit on Santorum as a congressional porker. At this point, Perry probably needs to finish ahead of Santorum in Iowa or he becomes a well funded spoiler candidate (and one that helps Romney to boot.)
2. So I went over to Santorum’s website. He wants to cap federal spending at 18% of GDP. The Ryan budget brings federal spending down to 20.75% of GDP by 2030. Given Santorum’s foreign policy inclinations, it isn’t likely that he is going to be for large cuts to the Pentagon budget (though he might be for changing how some of that money is spent.) So he would have to get Congress to cut the Ryan budget over 13% (and that is after some major cutting by Ryan), pretty much all of it outside of the military. That doesn’t strike me as plausible even as a negotiating tactic.
While I have you, can I ask you something? I’ll be quick.
Twenty-five thousand people subscribe to First Things. Why can’t that be fifty thousand? Three million people read First Things online like you are right now. Why can’t that be four million?
Let’s stop saying “can’t.” Because it can. And your year-end gift of just $50, $100, or even $250 or more will make it possible.
How much would you give to introduce just one new person to First Things? What about ten people, or even a hundred? That’s the power of your charitable support.
