Powerline’s John Hinderaker calls our attention to this Presidential Proclamation on the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade . From the Administration that more than any I’ve seen embraces the so-called nanny state, especially in ways that offend the consciences of sincere religious believers, comes this statement of the essence of that execrable decision: “this Supreme Court decision . . . affirms a broader principle: that government should not intrude on private family matters.”
Every child who has uttered these immortal words—“I didn’t choose to be born”—has to recognize that family is above all about mutual responsibility, not about choice. Leaving aside the family decisions upon which the Obama Administration appears to be more than willing to intrude or undermine, its protection and celebration of individual choice places it squarely at the front of the ranks of those who are assaulting the family as the locus and seedbed of responsibility.

Twenty-five thousand people subscribe to First Things. Why can’t that be fifty thousand? Three million people read First Things online like you are right now. Why can’t that be four million?
Let’s stop saying “can’t.” Because it can. And your year-end gift of just $50, $100, or even $250 or more will make it possible.
How much would you give to introduce just one new person to First Things? What about ten people, or even a hundred? That’s the power of your charitable support.
