1. It’s amazing how few blogs are saying MLK stuff today. So I thought about talking about the great and effective promotion of “direct action” directed against “white moderates” who knew, being Americans, what was right but (like most of us most of the time) preferred order to justice. The result was the completion of our original “colorblind” Constitution in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. That project ended up being too much work for a holiday. But if I had done it, I would have concluded with a tirade against Ron and Rand Paul libertarianism.

2. Wouldn’t it be nice if John Presnall won a Golden Globe for the film version of his witty and beautiful last two posts? It would be equally nice if George Clooney never won anything.

3. Two movies I’ve seen lately that were unexpectedly great: WARHORSE (I usually can’t stand Spielberg—but this is a eloquent anti-war film directed against probably the most senselessly and hugely murderous war ever—World War I. It’s an anti-imperial and almost a pro-Porcher movie, until you realize that the first misuse of the heroic horse was making him plow.) and MY WEEK WITH MARILYN (which is like MY FAVORITE YEAR but better).

4. The wouldn’t it be nice paragraph in John’s last post that includes MY name should at least be used in a Santorum commercial.

5. Real politics continues to depress and bore. Romney has a slight surge going on in SC. Paul may finish second even there. Santorum is fading slowly into fourth. Huntsman endorses Romney as the other real adult in the race!? I could go on. Wouldn’t it be nice if Pete were right once again and Santorum surged against the establishment, starting today?

Dear Reader,

While I have you, can I ask you something? I’ll be quick.

Twenty-five thousand people subscribe to First Things. Why can’t that be fifty thousand? Three million people read First Things online like you are right now. Why can’t that be four million?

Let’s stop saying “can’t.” Because it can. And your year-end gift of just $50, $100, or even $250 or more will make it possible.

How much would you give to introduce just one new person to First Things? What about ten people, or even a hundred? That’s the power of your charitable support.
