How do I know?  Facebook told me.  This is my opportunity to pay a little tribute to my fellow blogger.  Below, Pete writes a post that he begins with “I don’t have the mental energy . . . ” and then he proceeds to prove that even when he doesn’t have his usual mental energy he has more of it than most, say close to all, of the rest of the population.  When called out about it, he says that he got carried away, “I ended up building a head of steam” and that is what I like about him.  He’ll begin to analyze an idea or political situation and he’ll worry it like the proverbial dog with a bone until he’s pulled all of the meat and goodness off of or out of it.  He digs and pokes and prods and lays the thing out so we can examine all of politics involved.  Here is wherein he is not dog-like; he shares it all with us.  I’m grateful.

Happy Birthday, Pete!

Dear Reader,

While I have you, can I ask you something? I’ll be quick.

Twenty-five thousand people subscribe to First Things. Why can’t that be fifty thousand? Three million people read First Things online like you are right now. Why can’t that be four million?

Let’s stop saying “can’t.” Because it can. And your year-end gift of just $50, $100, or even $250 or more will make it possible.

How much would you give to introduce just one new person to First Things? What about ten people, or even a hundred? That’s the power of your charitable support.
