Our John observes in the thread (from Texas) that nobody he knows is actually voting for Romney. That’s not as true for me, but it is true that nobody I know in the “persuadable” category is doing so. In this respect, Mitt’s campaign is starting to remind us all more and more of McCain’s. Actually, McCain this time would at least be able to take it to Obama on the collapse of his foreign policy. Right now, Obama is fading rather quickly in terms of confidence in his foreign policy leadership, but confidence in Romney as a world leader isn’t growing.
So let me say that YOU should vote for Romney. He would be a better president than he is a candidate. And Romney’s situation isn’t hopeless, after all, assuming his campaign gets better and does well as a debater. Romney, unlike McCain, has plenty of money. Let’s start hoping that he starts to use it effectively to get some sort of message out. Pete is right that Ryan might have to be unleashed as messenger-in-chief, with the double-wide commercials and all.

Twenty-five thousand people subscribe to First Things. Why can’t that be fifty thousand? Three million people read First Things online like you are right now. Why can’t that be four million?
Let’s stop saying “can’t.” Because it can. And your year-end gift of just $50, $100, or even $250 or more will make it possible.
How much would you give to introduce just one new person to First Things? What about ten people, or even a hundred? That’s the power of your charitable support.
