Well, a better headline to describe the Panetta order to lift the combat ban for women is the one Powerline chooses:
I have always had respect for Leon Panetta, based in part on good reports from relatives on his early career in central California politics. And there has been evidence in the last few years that he has made efforts to protect Americans who serve from various sorts of vindictive Democratic madness.
But if you read the Powerline post, you will know that this action, surely an order from our President, is utterly irresponsible. Panetta should have refused to issue it while he remained Secretary of Defense.
Contemptible. Flush prudence down the toilet, for the sake of trumpeting the simplistic stance that 9th-grade feminist minds, most of all the perpetually 9th-grade ones, approve of.
While I have you, can I ask you something? I’ll be quick.
Twenty-five thousand people subscribe to First Things. Why can’t that be fifty thousand? Three million people read First Things online like you are right now. Why can’t that be four million?
Let’s stop saying “can’t.” Because it can. And your year-end gift of just $50, $100, or even $250 or more will make it possible.
How much would you give to introduce just one new person to First Things? What about ten people, or even a hundred? That’s the power of your charitable support.
