On Monday evening, September 12, Peter J. Leithart spoke at the University Church of Christ in downtown Austin. His lecture, “Reformational Catholicism,” drew on themes from his new book, The End of Protestantism.

The accelerating fragmentation of modern Christian denominations does not reflect the unity that Christ desires for his people. But why are these divisions so difficult to overcome? Can all be Christians be unified? Is Christian unity a utopian vision, not worth pursuing or even discussing in the real world?

No, says Leithart. The hope for reunion of the churches is an expression of confidence in the God who created out of nothing and continues to create anew, who brings life out of death.
