Each fall, First Things hosts a monthly reading group led by former Catholic University of America professor of philosophy David Gallagher and First Things editor R. R. Reno. The group runs through May and comprises nine sessions, with both in-person (at the First Things editorial offices) and Zoom options available. The 2021–22 reading group studied “Love and its Varieties: Christian and Non-Christian,” featuring selections from Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Goethe, Josef Pieper, and C. S. Lewis. To date, the First Things reading group has relied on word-of-mouth promotion. We plan to advertise future reading groups more broadly, with the goal of scaling up the reading group program to meet robust demand.
