The Rev. Dr. Stephen Sizer, minister of the Church of England and Vicar of Christ Church Virginia Water in the Diocese of Guildford, has demonstrated a readiness to issue apologies. It might be instructive to examine a few of these apologies to see what we can learn from them.

Wed, 08 Oct 2014 15:28:00 -email@example.com (Betsy Childs Howard)I doubt anyone in the Church of England who knows Rev. Stephen Sizer was surprised that he would attend a conference critical of Israel. Sizer, the Vicar of Christ Church in Virginia Water, Surrey, is an outspoken critic of what he calls Christian Zionism, that is, Christian support for the nation-state of Israel on theological grounds.

Al Jazeera America draws attention to a trend that is either heartening or ominous depending on your side of the abortion divide:

Thu, 19 Jun 2014 11:44:00 -email@example.com (Betsy Childs Howard)I grew up in a place that is best known for being on the wrong side of history. If you know anything about Birmingham, Alabama you know about its tragic history of racial oppression that culminated in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Although white churches in Birmingham had a great deal of power, most used that power to resist racial equality rather than achieve it.

The Four Loves
, C. S. Lewis writes, “Friendship (as the ancients saw) can be a school of virtue; but also (as they did not see) a school of vice. It is ambivalent. It makes good men better and bad men worse.” The same could be said of Twitter.

Wed, 02 Apr 2014 09:57:00 -firstname.lastname@example.org (Betsy Childs Howard)Last week, Mozilla, the foundation and company best known
for the web browser Firefox, made co-founder Brendan Eich the company’s chief
executive officer. Mozilla quickly faced an internal storm of protest from employees
along with a boycott of the Firefox browser organized by the dating site
OkCupid. At issue is the fact that Eich made a $1000 donation to California’s
Proposition 8 (the ballot initiative to restrict marriage to the traditional definition). Though he has
his commitment to make Mozilla “a place of equality and welcome for all,” those
calling for his resignation contend that Eich’s support of the 2008 law
disqualifies him for the position.
