			<description><![CDATA[<p>In the course of his long life, French philosopher Jacques Maritain (1882-1973) adopted a series of different political positions while remaining consistent in his philosophical theology. What is one to do with an intellectual whose political engagement ranged from an early flirtation with the authoritarian Action Fran&ccedil;aise to a leading role in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and who both helped to inspire the Second Vatican Council and caustically catalogued its allegedly pernicious cultural side effects? Ralph McInerny offers an image of a saintly savant almost bereft of practical wisdom: &ldquo;He careened from right to left and back again; his gyroscope only worked when he was in his study or on his knees.&rdquo; I would like to provide another interpretation.
