Yes, it is good not to “kid ourselves”. Another writer refers to the “lasting scars” as “dark and bitter marks upon the soul”.

I woke up in the middle of the night with a sick feeling last night, and the following phrase came to mind: “The deadly grip of sin on the human soul.” The power of grace can make the beast let go. But the bite marks will always be there. Until all things are made new and incorruptible.

The same was well said in the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam:
“The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety not Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy tears wash out a Word of it.”
