One can always count on our favorite Church basher, Ian Paisley, to think of new and creative ways to knock the Church. Most recently, he denounced Britain for inviting the pope because, regarding the sex-abuse scandals, the Church “is anti-Christ in teaching and doctrine.” One wonders what Church teaching and doctrine he would approve of.
But he ought to throw her a bone at least once, don’t you think? After all, the Church has always been there for him to bash.

Diogenes at CatholicCulture.org notes that Paisley’s words are, for him, “positively conciliatory. Remember that in 1988 the same Rev. Paisley told the European Parliament that the Pope is the Antichrist. Now he says that abusive priests are anti-Christ.”

Wow. Dr. Paisley has demoted the Anti-Christ, aka whore of Babylon, from a proper noun to a modifier.
Related note. I grew up in the Reformed Presbyterian Church — first cousins to Paisley’ Free Presbyterians– but I’ve found that my Presbyterian relatives have grown more conciliatory to the Catholic Church as the Anglicans more and more spew anti-Catholicism. Anti-Catholicism is still an acceptable bigotry.
