Oh, Al Gore isn’t going to like this. Some of the same scientists who predicted global warming, now see a coming big chill–because, waddya know–a lot of this is cyclical! From the story:
Among the most prominent of the scientists is Professor Mojib Latif, a leading member of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which has been pushing the issue of man-made global warming on to the international political agenda since it was formed 22 years ago. Prof Latif, who leads a research team at the renowned Leibniz Institute at Germany’s Kiel University, has developed new methods for measuring ocean temperatures 3,000ft beneath the surface, where the cooling and warming cycles start.
He and his colleagues predicted the new cooling trend in a paper published in 2008 and warned of it again at an IPCC conference in Geneva last September. Last night he told The Mail on Sunday: ‘A significant share of the warming we saw from 1980 to 2000 and at earlier periods in the 20th Century was due to these cycles – perhaps as much as 50 per cent. ‘They have now gone into reverse, so winters like this one will become much more likely. Summers will also probably be cooler, and all this may well last two decades or longer. ‘The extreme retreats that we have seen in glaciers and sea ice will come to a halt. For the time being, global warming has paused, and there may well be some cooling.’
It won’t be, but this should be good news to the climate hysterics: They won’t die of global warming. More to the point, if there is a problem of man-caused climate change, it gives us much more time to accommodate our energy and other industries to a cleaner approach without a wrenching economic dislocation. Best of all, we don’t need global oligarchy governing us to stop a purported global warming apocalypse. And that, my friends, is why this news–if it pans out–could be very unwelcome among certain quarters of the Copenhagen Crowd.

It will be interesting to observe all of the “duck and weave” (or outright denial) that will no doubt ensue.
They must maintain a sense of urgency and alarmism. It’s an integral part of their strategy.
It’s kind of like that robot on the old TV show “Lost in Space” – “Danger, Will Robinson, danger!” (as he flails his arms about wildly)
Truthfully, the instilling of a sense of impending doom is their only real hope.
It is, after all, all about control.
If anything, it will probably only slow them down for a while in trying to implement their agenda. (Which is still a very good thing!)

Bet they find some way to tax us for cooling and warming at the same time.

Sensible people never believed the hysteria coming from the climategate extremists. Climate changes – that is what it does, and just as people get sick and then recover but quack doctors tell them that their elixir made them better, so quack scientists will use natural variation in the climate to sell their own snake-oil.

Professor Latif did not make an about-face on global warming.
from http://climateprogress.org/2009/10/01/interview-with-dr-mojib-latif-global-cooling-revkin-morano-george-will/
….In an interview today, Dr. Latif told me “we don’t trust our forecast beyond 2015″ and “it is just as likely you’ll see accelerated warming” after then. Indeed, in his published research, rapid warming is all-but-inevitable over the next two decades. He told me, “you can’t miss the long-term warming trend” in the temperature record, which is “driven by the evolution of greenhouse gases.” Finally, he pointed out “Our work does not allow one to make any inferences about global warming.”…..
The long-term trend in mean global temperature will continue to increase because of the accumulation of atmospheric greenhouse gases. Natural variability around that mean due to ocean oscillations, volcanic eruptions and atmospheric aerosols does not change that fact.
Is it your position that increased atmospheric CO2 does not contribute to global warming? Do you think the mean global temperature in 2020, 2030, 2040, 2050 will be less, the same or more than in 2010?

There you go again, Wesley — focusing on all sorts of insignificant people, rather than actual CLIMATE SCIENTISTS. What do the real, live CLIMATE SCIENTISTS say, HUH, Wesley?
Oh, wait.
“The bitter winter afflicting much of the Northern Hemisphere is only the start of a global trend towards cooler weather that is likely to last for 20 or 30 years, say some of the world’s most eminent climate scientists.”
As Emily Litella (pictured) would say, “Never MIIIIII-IND…”

We don’t know exactly WHAT is going to happen, but we DO know it WILL be BAD

“The bitter winter afflicting much of the Northern Hemisphere is only the start of a global trend towards cooler weather that is likely to last for 20 or 30 years, say some of the world’s most eminent climate scientists.”
An interesting construct for that quotation, wouldn’t you say? Did “some” of the world’s most eminent climate scientists say exactly the same thing? Did any particular scientist actually say it?
from DeepClimate
Sept. 1: It may well happen that you enter a decade, or maybe even two, when the temperature cools, relative to the present level. – Mojib Latif at World Climate Conference in Geneva
Sept. 4: One of the world’s top climate modellers said Thursday we could be about to enter one or even two decades during which temperatures cool. – Fred Pearce, New Scientist.
Sept. 5: UN Fears (More) Global Cooling Commeth! IPCC Scientist Warns UN: We are about to enter ‘one or even 2 decades during which temps cool’ – Marc Morano, Climate Depot (CFACT)
Sept. 19: Latif conceded … that we are likely entering “one or even two decades during which temperatures cool.” – Lorne Gunter, Calgary Herald.
Sept. 25: Mojib Latif of Kiel University in Germany told a UN conference earlier this month that he is now predicting global cooling for several decades. – Marc Morano, Climate Depot (CFACT).
Professor Latif has since clarified his remarks, and is the only scientist listed in the quotes. Marc Morano is not a scientist but was able to translate “it may happen that.. a decade maybe two” into “is now predicting global cooling for several decades”.
A look at global temperatures over time also indicate that Dr. Tsonis statement that “man-made warming is balanced by natural cycles” is just not true.

bmmg39 there is hope that the REAL, live climate scientists will get a say so now.
January 12th, 2010 | 5:18 am
Would it be better if they would consider another conference retreats regarding this issue. I mean the change is very visible, everyone could see it and feel it.
January 12th, 2010 | 9:56 am
Yesterday, in the Manchester Guardian, Professor Latif criticizes the Mail.online for its misleading take on his research.
“Leading climate scientist challenges Mail on Sunday’s use of his research — Mojib Latif denies his research supports theory that current cold weather undermines scientific consensus on global warming”
Said Latif: “The natural variation occurs side by side with the manmade warming. Sometimes it has a cooling effect and can offset this warming and other times it can accelerate it.”
David Adam, environment correspondent guardian.co.uk, Monday 11 January 2010 16.47 GMT
The scientist whose research was used by climate skeptics to undermine the theory of global warming says that reporters misinterpreted his data and conclusions. This seems like another dead end.
It seems the tactical approach of climate skeptics is to keep the reality-based community engaged in continually refuting misinformation!

Wesley,
Finally, will you retract or change your headline? It is clearly false.
Wesley J. Smith Reply:
January 12th, 2010 at 10:33 am
No, Jeffrey. It isn’t false. Even if one believes warming will continue, the need for panic and immediate change is past if these people are right.
January 12th, 2010 | 10:17 am
If “a cleaner approach” to energy technology is justifiable to any extent at all, the idiot notion of “carbon footprint” must be discarded and concern needs to be focused upon emissions which actually result in real material damage to human beings and their property.
In this light, I recommend pressing the deployment of light water nuclear fission technology, which is still the safest and most reliable form of electric power generation available, with control of potentially hazardous waste products far more secure and a great deal easier than with presently operating or likely future coal-fired powerplants.
Anti-nuke Luddites are invited to re-wedge their heads and shut the hell up, but I’d be perfectly happy to beat them to death if they’re stupid enough to flaunt their stupidity online.

The denialist strategy: repeating debunked, unsubstantiated talking points ad nauseam! Manufacture doubt! Personal attacks!
The earth is flat, and smoking doesn’t cause cancer. Of course! We knew it all along.
We scoff at science.

Ah, but the scientific “consensus” is falling apart, as this post points out, and Climategate shows that the game was rigged. Beyond that, if you want to win over people who are skeptical, you have to quit the nastiness. “Deniers” as in Holocaust deniers doesn’t cower anyone, Joe. But it does make us think that you aren’t worried about the world so much as trying to abuse science to prevail in politics. Keep it up. It helps people who don’t want to trash our economies chasing phantoms.
January 12th, 2010 | 11:55 am
Jeffery: “An interesting construct for that quotation, wouldn’t you say?”
You’re complaining about THAT? NOW? For years, the media have used phrases such as “the scientists” to suggest that all scientists agree on [whatever the issue at the time is]. Now that it’s being used in reverse, you’re suddenly outraged by it. Interesting.
January 12th, 2010 | 1:56 pm
Wesley,
Which UN scientists have done an about face?
January 12th, 2010 | 4:46 pm
Professor Latif has called this story in the Mail a lie. He didn’t talk to them and their account of his work is the opposite of what his work really shows.
January 12th, 2010 | 7:14 pm
bmmg,
Of course, you have no idea what I have complained about and when, do you?
The Mail appears to have made up quotes attributed to ‘scientists’ whom they did not identify.
Can you give us some examples to support your claim that the ‘media’ have attributed quotes to groups of scientists?
Thanks.
January 12th, 2010 | 11:29 pm
Wesley,
…the scientific “consensus” is falling apart, as this post points out…
Since the Mail news article has been proven to be filled with falsehoods and fabricated quotes, how could it possible ‘point out’ anything other than the dishonesty and incompetence of the Mail (and the bloggers misled by the Mail)?
Please name the UN scientists who have ‘called about face’ as described by your demonstrably false title.
January 12th, 2010 | 11:56 pm
I have no idea?
Okay. Just let me know when you have complained in the past about the media making blanket statements that “scientists agree” on climate change, stem-cell research, medical treatments, et all, and I’ll happily retract my question.
