Just great.  In Oregon, an assisted suicide clinic is going to be established. From the story:

Portland psychiatrist Dr. Stuart Weisberg plans to open a house in the Sellwood neighborhood where the terminally ill can kill themselves under Oregon’s Death with Dignity Law. Weisberg told KGW-TV he felt compelled to act after watching a TV interview with Dr. Jack Kevorkian, who pioneered assisted suicide. Under Oregon law, a terminally ill state resident with only six months to live may receive a lethal dose of drugs from a pharmacy if two doctors agree.

Hey Doc, Kevorkian supports human vivisection, what he calls “obitiatry.”  Do you want to open an obitiatry clinic too?

Imagine a psychiatrist pushing suicide!  This should be considered a breach of professional ethics because it puts the authority of the mental health professions in favor of self destruction.  Here’s a novel idea:  How about a clinic to help people not want to commit assisted suicide? Nah.  No news in that.

    Wesley,

Unfortunately, he may be able to justify his practice so long as those who he “assists” had a reason for wanting to commit suicide that meets some definition of “rational suicide”. I do not know if psychiatric standards of practice or ethics would allow for that, but it would not surprise me if they did in at least some states.

Anyway, it’s legal, right? So that means it’s all good, right?

Peter S. The concept of “rational suicide” bubbling up from within the mental health professions has concerned me for some time. See, for example, my piece at NRO: http://article.nationalreview.com/269440/taking-requests-doing-harm/wesley-j-smith

He has to have a second doctor in on this, I gather. Wonder what the second doctor is–a podiatrist?

Any psychiatrist who assists in someone’s suicide, has not only completely disovowed his/her professional moral code, but gone completely against what the psychiatric community should be about: helping those with neurobiological illnesses. This is equivolent to an oncologist actively inducing cancer in one of his patients.
