The Prodigal Son’s Next Life

He forgave first
not forgiving
himself before

as he then forgave
the dust trailing his steps
faithful as his shadow,

as one who has gotten
away with something
forgives a fallen nestling,

a lost yearling,
another self
who never turned back

from a land
of lean cattle
and empty of bees.
