Democrats like cognac and Republicans enjoy light beers, Thomas B. Edsall reports:

Who would have guessed that the most Democratic drink by a long shot is Cognac, or that such lite beers as Amstel Lite, Michelob Ultra, Miller Lite and Sam Adams Light tilt so far to the political right, while Bud, Miller High Life, and Natural Lite are Democratic?

Scotch, Guinness, and Bud Light sit right in the middle. Those who abstain from alcohol, including many Evangelical voters, are of course left out altogether.

I’m not surprised by the cognac, it’s a pricy drink and that what limousine liberals would drink, but I am surprised that gin isn’t high on the Republican side, being that the like Martinis.

I’d be interested to see differences in wine consumption. I never drink hard liquor, and rarely drink beer, but I do like wine quite a bit.

Please note that the percentage graph stops at 55. That gives you a somewhat distorted idea of how different the percentages are, if you don’t realize that.

Gee, I figured Samuel Adams would be more for Democrats. It’s New England-produced, it’s craft beer — does the whole “American Revolution” brand just reel in the Republicans?

I’d like to see an extended analysis that includes wines, as well as “craft/local beer” as a category.

Not surprised at all. And I have to say Pastor Spomer couldn’t be farther from the truth. Cognac has been adopted into black ghetto culture after being lauded in numerous rap songs and blacks vote overwhelmingly Democrat. This is the same reason gin (think Snoop Dogg’s song “Gin and Juice”) and malt liquor are on the Democrat side. Natty Light and Milwaukee’s Best are discount beers that are very popular on college campuses which also tend to lean left.

This is one very orthodox Catholic who loves his Cognac (and even more, his Calvados). That anomoly can, however, be chalked up to my French-American father. Pentamon’s caveat is in order here.
Also, where is hard cider on the list? I love the stuff – and it was far more popular than beer in 18th c. America.

The skew in party affiliation among cognac drinkers is obviously racial – and hence, not at all surprising.

And homebrews and home vintages. A lot of my conservative friends (probably a disproportionate number) concoct stuff at home, many others drink mainly craft/local beers (that’d be me) and most of the rest stick mainly with wine.

Good black coffee. The drink of adventurers, warriors, and thinkers.
